Why to consider laminate and how it works
Laminate appeals to homeowners who want the warmth and character of a wood-look floor with a construction built specifically for durability against everyday wear. It's a common choice for basement remodels, rental turnovers, and full-home updates where consistency across a lot of square footage matters, and it holds up well in busy households without a lot of specialized care.
Like vinyl, laminate is a floating floor — the planks lock together and rest on top of a thin underlayment rather than being nailed or glued to the subfloor. The process starts with rolling out that underlayment across a clean, leveled subfloor, which helps with sound absorption and gives the planks a stable surface to click into. From there, planks are laid row by row, staggered so the seams don't line up in a way that weakens the floor or looks repetitive. Underneath the printed wood-look layer is a high-density fiberboard core, topped with a clear wear layer rated by an AC (Abrasion Class) number — AC3 is fairly standard for residential use, while AC4 or AC5 shows up in homes wanting extra insurance against a large family or shedding pets. Expansion gaps get left around the room's perimeter as the planks go in, since laminate shifts slightly with seasonal humidity — skipping this step is one of the more common causes of buckling down the line. Once the last row is trimmed and locked in, transition strips are added at doorways and the baseboards or quarter-round trim go back on to conceal the expansion gap.

Can laminate be installed in a bathroom or laundry room?
Standard laminate isn't built for standing water, so it's not usually recommended in those spaces. Waterproof laminate variants do exist now and are a better fit if you want the look in a moisture-prone room.
Why does laminate need a gap around the edges of the room?
Because it's a floating floor, it needs room to expand and contract with humidity changes throughout the year. Installing it flush against the walls with no gap is one of the more common reasons laminate floors buckle or peak at the seams later on.
